Getting rid of ants in the garden: the use of millet

The ants in the garden give gardeners a lot of trouble. Despite the fact that they fertilize the soil and destroy the caterpillars, these insects eat seedlings and spread over the aphid. In order not to harm the plantations, in the fight against pests, folk remedies are often used, such as millet from ants.

The action of cereals in the garden

Although the effect of millet on insects has not been studied, nevertheless, this product allows you to drive pests from the site in a short time. There are 3 versions in total, why ants are afraid of millet:

  1. In spring, the uterus carries eggs to the surface of the anthill so that they warm themselves in the sun. Then she mistakenly brings the groats into the dwelling. Here, under the influence of high humidity, the grains swell and clog outlets. So the whole family dies from the cold.
  2. Insects feed on millet and bring it to their queen. Their stomachs are not adapted for the digestion of cereals, where it also begins to swell, leading the whole family to death.
  3. Ants carry seeds in their lockers, where the microclimate for millet is not suitable. Too high humidity causes the formation of mold on the surface of the cereal. Ants cannot tolerate the smell of mold, so they begin to leave their home.

Grains are scattered around the anthill, along the paths and on the elevation itself in early spring, as soon as the snow cover has melted. To attract insects faster, millet should be sweetened by mixing it with a small amount of powdered sugar.

Effective Lures

To prevent the rapid increase in the number of individuals in the anthill, preventive measures should be taken. To do this, study all the routes of movement of insects. Then these paths are sprinkled with cereals.

In addition, it is important to scatter the product on the surface of the beds. In this case, special attention is paid to strawberry plantations, garden strawberries, sorrel, lettuce and cucumbers. In the garden, you need to sprinkle the area around the currant and gooseberry bushes, as well as devote to go around all the fruit trees. If rows of insects are noticeable on the bark, paths of small grains are also made around the crown.

Most often, millet is used raw, but it is slightly prepared before use. You can mix 1 kg of cereal with 200 g of powdered sugar. This composition is scattered directly around the anthill or directly on it. The second option involves soaking the cereal in warm water. After 15-20 minutes, sugar, jam, jam or honey is added to the liquid. All are thoroughly mixed and laid out along the paths of insects. And you can immediately soak millet in cooked sugar syrup or in any fermented jam.

The weakness of the method of controlling insects with the help of cereals is considered to be a short exposure time. Recorded cases of pests returning to abandoned homes 2-3 weeks after the application of millet. If this situation occurs, the processing will have to be repeated. At the same time, it is important to combine bait from grains with other means, but more aggressive and permanent.

If it is not possible to plant fragrant plants around the anthill, you can again cultivate the soil with cereals, but with the addition of any gentle chemical preparation. For this purpose, Muravyin is excellent. The preparation is mixed with grain in the proportion specified in the instructions, and the bait is laid out in the garden. The advantage of this option is the death of the queen, to whom the working ants will bring poisoned cereals.
